Start of School Information and Tasks

August 30, 2021

Welcome to High Rock School.  Wednesday, September 1 officially starts a great journey for your child in middle school.  We are all looking forward to coming together as a community.  Teachers have been engaged in collaboration and preparation for your children’s arrival.  We hope this information helps everyone feel relaxed and ready to arrive at school.  Put worries aside, once your child steps foot on campus, we will take it all from there

The building opens at 7:25 am  once students enter the building there will be adults throughout the hallways directing students to their advisory rooms.  Children will bring their backpacks, coats, lunches, etc. to the Advisory Classroom.   Once they arrive, Advisory teachers will spend time helping students get to know each other, touring the building, assigning lockers, explaining the daily schedule and getting students off on the right foot.  Students must be in their advisory classrooms no later than 7:40am.

If your child is coming to school by car, bicycle, or walking they should arrive at the lower entrance drop off area near the soccer field on Linden Street.  We ask that you do not wait until you are right in front of the to drop off your child.  As soon as your vehicle has turned into the driveway, if there is a sidewalk, you can let your child out of the car on the SIDEWALK side.  Once your child has safely exited the vehicle, drivers may cautiously pass cars on the left to leave the school property.  It is important to note that cars are not permitted to drop off students in the upper parking lot on Ferndale Road.  This location is for bus drop off only.

School ends at 2:10 pm.  It is important that families have their pick up arrangements already set before children head off to school.  We have a brief period of supervised time for pick up.  Having plans that are clear to both child and adult is helpful.  (Pick up is also at the lower entrance drop off area near the soccer field on Linden Street).

Instead of sending home a big paper packet of information on the first day, we have included it in this email.  Please review all the information and complete some start of school year tasks.  There are items that must be completed by Friday, September 10.  We have broken the sections into MUST DO and MAY DO.

MAY DO

Removing Child from Online Directory in PowerSchool

Families look for ways to contact new friends or classmates that we meet at the start of the school year.  While we encourage students to engage in conversations and develop new friendships, there are times that adult involvement is helpful. The District has an online student directory that lists student names, cluster, and parent/guardian contacts (phone and email).  At this time all students at High Rock are listed in this directory.  If you do not wish to have your child’s information made public in this directory, please follow the steps outlined here.  This directory is intended solely for the use and convenience of NPS families. Under no circumstances is the information in this directory to be used for solicitation or commercial purposes of any kind.  Only families in grade 6,using their PowerSchool username and password, will be able to see the information listed in the High Rock Directory.

High Rock & Pollard PTC
As you may or may not know, our PTC represents both the High Rock and Pollard Middle Schools. Their unified mission strives to both contribute to the educational enrichment and extracurricular programs for all students; as well as to foster a sense of community among students, parents, teachers and administrators.  With your help, they can continue to bring this incredible programming and support for our school community. We appreciate any amount that you are comfortable contributing. That said, they gently suggest $75 (all of which is tax deductible!) There are two ways to give:

Donate online.  (Please be aware that by placing a donation online we incur a 3% transaction fee.  Please consider factoring that into your contribution.)   DONATE HERE.

Or, send a check with your child in the “blue envelope” sent home (or any envelope labeled “PTC”.)  In addition to your financial support, please consider volunteering your time as well.

At the start of each school year, middle school families’ primary emails listed in PowerSchool are included in a High Rock/Pollard PTC Email Communication List.  If you wish to have your email removed from this list, please contact the main office at High Rock School by Friday, September 10. After that date, you can use the “unsubscribe” feature included in any PTC communication to remove your email from the list. High Rock - Pollard Parent Teacher Council (PTC).

High Rock School Council

The High Rock School Advisory Council is a valuable part of our community and I am looking for volunteers to serve as parent representatives for the 2021-2022 school year.

The School Advisory Council is a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers and community members.  Each school in Massachusetts is mandated by state law to have a School Advisory Council.  The School Advisory Council assists the principal by reviewing the school budget and developing the School Improvement Plan.

Our meetings are held on Mondays, from 3 to 4 p.m.  The following list is tentative dates for this year: October 13 @ 5:30pm,  November 8, December 13, January 10, February 14, March 14, April 11, and May 9.  If you wish to be a member of the School Advisory Council please submit a letter of interest to Jessica Downey no later than Monday, September 27, 2021.

It is our hope that this information assists families in feeling comfortable with communication  between home and High Rock.  The more we embark on open and honest conversation, with what is best for our students as our focus; we will continue to build a strong and responsive community.
We are looking forward to sharing a wonderful and enriching school year together.

Sincerely,

Jessica R. Downey

Principal
